Shelley Lasica's practice is characterized by cross-disciplinary collaborations and an interest in the presentation of dance in various spatial contexts.

Lasica’s practice spans 30 years and investigates the methodology around dance and movement and the various contexts in which they occur. She is interested in what dance means to people, how it functions and how it can be used to shape our experience of the world. Major themes explored in her work are the interaction between spoken, written and movement language, loss of memory and senses, coincidence and the subject of space.

In this video Lasica talks about her unusual dance background, the influence of her mother and other artists, her experience of performance and the importance of standing her ground as a young female practitioner, taking authority and reversing the gaze.

STUDIO is an artist interview series, speaking with artists about their process and practice. This series aims to be reflective and responsive to current conversations within contemporary art and more broadly. With a focus on Australian artists STUDIO makes accessible conversations that happen in the studio; creating an archive that links generations, highlights crossovers and examines different disciplines.

STUDIO is created by Tamsen Hopkinson (Ngati Kahungunu), an artist and curator from Aotearoa based in Narrm, Melbourne.
